A Beautiful Love Letter

I'm not one to shout from the rooftops about how wonderful I am or how I'm such an amazing doula. In fact, sometimes when I meet with potential clients, I forget to talk about myself, because I get so enthralled with other people's stories and hearing more about their lives.

So, it's with humility that I wanted to share one of my latest reviews with you all. Not because I think I'm awesome, but because my clients value me enough to leave me some amazing feedback. And, if you're considering hiring me to support your Knoxville or Chattanooga birth, then maybe you'll find these words useful!

Here's my latest review by Amanda U., a doula client from earlier this year.

One of My Favorite Doula Moments

As a doula, I get to experience all sorts of milestones alongside a woman, a child, and a family. So, with that I acquire quite a few "favorite doula moments" for each client I support.

However, I think one of my favorite moments of the past month has been with a mom who has learned to ask questions.

Question-asking really is a skill. And it takes confidence and courage. But, it's a huge step in becoming an active participant in your own pregnancy and birth experience.

So, who should you question? Everyone! What questions should you ask? All questions!

Okay, that seems a little open-ended. But, I'm serious. If someone -- anyone (birth related or not!) presents something as fact, there is no shame in asking for evidence to support it. There is no shame in presenting your own evidence to counter other evidence. There is no shame in being a question-asker. In fact, quite the opposite.

There is power in being a question asker.

So, kudos to the question-asking mom!

Doulas Can Help Turn Lemons into Lemonade

Having a doula is not a magic wand. Sometimes I dearly wish it was. However, things don't always go how you/we planned --- whether it's in birth or postpartum / physical or emotional. But, even though I can't guarantee outcomes, I can guarantee support. And with that support, I can provide you with options, choices, and resources to make the best of any situation.

I'm your professional doula lemonade maker, if you will.

If you're handed "lemons" during labor, as your doula, I can give you options and alternatives and support to make the difficult decisions.

If you're handed "lemons" after labor, again, as your doula, I can give you options and alternatives, as well as outside resources (I have a huge list of support persons in the area ranging from postpartum counselors to lactation consultants).

However your birth goes --- beautifully as planned or beautifully as unplanned --- I'll be there for you. Holding that beautiful pitcher of lemonade begging you to drink from it.

My Promise As Your Doula

baby doula knoxville chattanooga

I take my job as your doula seriously. When I began birth work I don't think I truly understand the impact that doulas can potentially make -- for good and for bad.

So, here are some promises that as your doula I make to you...

I PROMISE TO...

  • Never judge your decisions. I may push back if you've indicated you want me to. But judge? Nope. Never.
  • Tell you that you are amazing. Always. No matter what.
  • Let you tell your own birth story. I'm not going to take to Facebook, etc and even give vague details about your birth without your explicit permission.
  • Validate your inner feelings and decisions. Whatever you are feeling is true. Whatever decision you make is the right one for you.
  • Not replace your partner.
  • Be your biggest cheerleader (but not the annoying kind).
  • Give you options, choices, risks, benefits, and alternatives throughout your entire labor.
  • Hold your birth in my heart and treasure the sacred time you've allowed me to be a part of.

Those are just a few things you can expect from me as your doula. Doula work is such important work. I don't take it lightly.
